Lake Buchanan is the second largest of the Highland Lakes lakes and is positioned at the top of the chain where the Colorado Rivers enters. The Lake has a length of 30 miles and a width at the widest point of just under 5 miles and a shoreline of 124 miles. It was formed by the construction of Buchanan Dam by the Lower Colorado River Authority to provide a water supply for the region and to provide hydroelectric power. Buchanan Dam, a structure over 2 miles in length, was completed in 1939. When built, it was considered the longest multiple-arch dam in the United States.
